Are You Leading or Following?

Are you leading or following?

I love to read all the catchy little messages posted on church signs up and down the road. They are usually only a few simple words, yet they deliver such powerful messages. This particular one is on a sign just down the street from where I live. I have passed by it several times over the last few days and each time I do the meaning seems to hit home more and more.

Only if we follow can God lead the way…nine words, but such profound meaning.

God loves us so much and He has an amazing plan for each one of our lives! In fact, He loves us so much that He gave us a free will. Free will! Sounds great, right?  Well, not always. Because we have a free will, we have to choose to follow Him instead of taking the lead.

I often struggle with wondering if I am trying to take the lead.  Whether it is regarding something big about my future or just something as simple as His plan for that day. I am a driven person and I like to accomplish things and mark them off my to-do-list. When it seems God is moving too slow or maybe not at all, I am tempted to ‘help’ Him out a little. Lol.

Even as I am typing ‘Lol’ I know it really isn’t very funny… or fun…when I choose to take the lead.  Honestly, most of the time when I do decide to take the reigns I end up regretting it pretty badly.  And it’s not that it always ends in a disaster, but many times it does result in a consequence of some kind. Lack of peace, guilt, regret or even a monetary consequence.

While the consequence may not be life altering,  it’s a consequence nonetheless. And the worst part of all? I am usually totally aware of what I am doing, yet I still move forward. I still don’t understand it!

One of my pastor’s used to say that the definition of insanity was ” Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.” Every time I jump ahead of God and take the lead I end up with the same result. Regret.

Lord help me to slow down and wait on You.

This is so very true…..I seem to always seem to be playing leap, frog with God. If I would just relax, enjoy the quiet moments and embrace His word….my legs sure wouldn’t be so tired! In addition to your statement of having regret for the same results.

    Sounds so easy huh?
